One thing I like a lot about the COB Light Storm fixtures is how versatile they are with the Bowens mount. We have so many options for modifiers it’s really great. The Aputure fresnel is one of the accessories.
The original was pretty good and Aputure now has a new updated version. The Aputure Fresnel 2X. It can be used with the 120 and 300 COB Light Storm fixtures. Due to that versatile Bowens mount. At IBC Ted from Aputure showed several new modifiers including a new Leko projection that fits on the COB Light Storms. The Leko isn’t available yet but is highly anticipated for sure.
I first saw the prototype of the new Aputure Fresnel 2X at IBC and it looked promising.
Well, today is the official release of the newly updated Aputure Fresnel 2X so let’s take a look at the features and see if it stacks up to the claimed 2X more output of the original.
New Aputure Fresnel Lens or should I say Lenses
The overall size of the Aputure Fresnel 2X is 2-inches larger than the original and much wider too.
It now has a 6″ front lens however it keeps the same front dimensions so the Aputure barn doors fit just fine.
Not only is it bigger it has an extra K9 Optical lens inside that helps shape the light and change the beam angle. This internal lens is what increases the output over the original fresnel.
Aputure Fresnel Focusing System
The focusing system is also updated. Instead of loosening a locking knob and pulling to focus it now has a twisting motion that is much easier to perform and more precise as well. The range is from 12 to 40 degrees spot to flood. The dual lens design with inner K9 Optical lens and outer 6 inches large Fresnel lens bringing more output to your COB light.
Another nice upgrade is you don’t need to lock it in place as it holds its position. It has a very nice feel to it. A simple turn focuses the light. Also, I noticed no light leak from the sides since the body has no openings other than on the back.
Output compared to the original Aputure Fresnel
With an Aputure 300d I took LUX readings with a Sekonic C-700-U from 1-meter to the front of the COB.
300d with stock modifier 11,200 LUX
Fresnel Version 1
Flood 31,300 LUX
Spot 55,200
Fresnel 2X
Flood 34,200 LUX
Spot 97,900 LUX
The Fresnel 2X output performs better than the original with 2900 LUX more output. While at spot setting it increased to 42,700 LUX. Substantially brighter.
Small things matter
The new Fresnel 2X comes in a nice soft case. This is great to keep it from getting banged up in your kit. The original didn’t have a case so nice upgrade.
The Aputure barn doors are also compatible with the new Fresnel 2X. I did a test to see how clean they cut.
I pulled out an ARRI 650 to compare the beam with a 300d COB Light Storm and how the fresnels cut.
As for clean edges, I think they are very close however the ARRI 650 beam is much broader than the Aputure 300d with Fresnel 2X . This is two meters from the screen.
I like the new design. Yes, it’s bigger but if it performs better and is easier to use. I think it’s a worthy upgrade. It didn’t double the output of the original however 2900 LUX in the flood position and at spot an increased of 42,700 LUX is substantially brighter. All in all a nice version two of the fresnel.
