Insta360 Pro 2 Announced featuring 8K 3D & FlowState Stabilization

Insta360 has launched the Insta360 Pro 2 featuring 8K 3D, FlowState Stabilization and a simplified VR workflow.

The Insta360 Pro 2 uses a six-lens setup to shoot 8K-per-eye 3D 360 video. Back in April, Insta360 announced native integration into Premiere Pro which has continued with the development of the Insta360 Pro 2 offering a simple post-production workflow.

The Pro 2 camera can shoot 8K 3D at 30 FPS, 8K monoscopic at 60FPS, 6K 3D at 60 FPS, 4K 3D at 120 FPS and more. There is also built-in HDR modes and a flat i-Log colour profile.

FlowState Stabilization

We first saw the introduction of FlowState Stabilization back in March 2018 via a firmware update for the Insta360 ONE. FlowState Stabilization provides a high-quality, in-camera stabilisation without the use of a gimbal or stabilising hardware. The Pro 2 achieves this by using an ultra-precise gyroscope that tracks motion on nine axes and automatically stabilises the footage via software.

FarSight Technology

A common challenge with 360/VR content is not being seen. Insta360 is aiming to provide a solution to this with their new FarSight technology which is a 360° live monitoring system that offers a high-definition, low-latency video stream, optimised for long-distance previewing.

The FarSight technology doesn’t use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi but transmits at 5.18GHz using the transmitter connected to the Pro 2 and receiver device that is connected to the phone or tablet. Insta360 claims a transmission range of around 300 meters with smart channel switching technology for optimal signal.

With the Pro 2, Insta360 is also aiming to simplify the post-production workflow. Low-res proxy files can be created in addition to the full-quality footage for less intensive editing. The footage is also automatically stitched together saving time and work for the editor.

Camera Specs

The Pro 2 is lightweight, at only 3 pounds it would be possible to mount it onto a drone. A hot-swap battery dock enables continuous power and four built-in mics capture immersive 360-surround audio. USB and 3.5mm audio inputs are found on the top and bottom, allowing for custom audio setups and other add-ons.

The Pro 2 features seven, yes, seven memory card slots. Six micro SD card slots and one full sized SD card slot. One micro SD card slot for each lens and the full size for capturing stabilization data and the low-res proxy files.

Live Streaming Capabilities

The Insta360 supports 360 live-streaming at 4K resolution, in both 3D and monoscopic formats. It’s good to know that live-streaming does not affect the capability of recording the full-quality 8K image at the same time, providing the ability to live-stream and publish a higher-quality finished piece afterwards.
