LaCie’s 2TB DJI Copilot BOSS USB 3.1 Type-C External Hard Drive was announced at CES 2018. Designed specifically for videographers, photographers and drone owners in mind, this latest offering from Lacie looks to be a nice in-field backup solution.
With so many of us having to backup our own material in the field, there has been a growing need for portable solutions where a computer isn’t required. If you are a solo shooter or work in a small team you already have enough to carry around and taking a computer just increases that load. In-field self-contained backup solutions like the new LaCie 2TB DJI Copilot BOSS USB 3.1 Type-C external hard drive look to be a good alternative to traditional methods most of us have been using.
Backup like a BOSS
BOSS, which is short for Backup On-Set Solutions, is an in-field backup solution with direct file ingestion that does not require a computer. Not only can it backup but it can also provide mobile-device charging and mobile file management.
The DJI Copilot BOSS provides up to 2TB of storage which is plenty for the average shooter. Files can be copied directly from drones, action cameras, DSLRs, phones, USB hard drives, and USB flash drives to the 2TB internal drive. The drive is claimed to have built-in drop, splash, and dust resistance, and has been designed specifically for use out in the field.
There is no indication currently of what the maximum read or write speeds of this drive are, but speed will depend on the type of connection and media you are using.
DJI BOSS app
Using the DJI BOSS app and the included USB Type-C, USB Type-C to Type-A, Lightning, and micro-USB cables, as well as the integrated SD card reader and included microSD to SD adapter, files can be downloaded, and the integrated LCD screen also allows for the monitoring of file transfers, storage capacity, and battery power.
You can connect Copilot to your phone or tablet via USB and launch the app without the need for internet. You can then play back video files, rename files or even delete files you don’t need.
The DJI Copilot is compatible with mobile phones and tablets running iOS 10.3 or Android 4.4 or later, as well as systems running Windows 10 or higher and Mac OS X 10.10 or higher with an available USB 3.1 Type-C, Thunderbolt™ 3, USB 3.0, or USB 2.0 port. To allow users to edit and post content quickly, a 1-month membership to Adobe Creative Cloud is included, and overall protection is provided by a limited 3-
year Rescue Data Services Recovery plan.
The LaCie 2TB DJI Copilot BOSS USB 3.1 Type-C External Hard Drive will retail for $349.99 USD. Availability is not yet known.
