Ahead of CP+ show in Japan, Sony have announced what they claim to be the World’s fastest SD card. The new SF-G series are SDXC, with UHS II U3 compatibility. They offer up to 299MB/s write speeds, and 300Mb/s read speeds, and will be available in capacities of 32, 64 and 128GB. The new cards will certainly be up to the task when it comes to recording 4K video and higher frame rates. This new card from Sony looks to beat out the Lexar Professional 2000x UHS-II U3 which has read speed of up to 300 MB/s and write speeds of up to 260 MB/s.
A new memory card reader, the Sony MRW-S1, will also be available to deal with the fast read and write speeds. The reader has a built-in USB 3.1 connection. The cards will be available sometime in March, but there is currently no word on pricing. For a comparison the 128GB Lexar Professional 2000x UHS-II U3 SD card costs $314.99US.
The SF-G cards are capable of capturing video data that is far in excess of what the current range of Sony cameras can record. As a comparison 299MB/s is 2392Mb/s, whilst Sony’s 4K video, in its consumer line only has a data rate of 100Mb/s. The new SF-G cards may well be a pre-cursor to future offerings from Sony that could record at much higher data rates.
