Dedo lights have become ubiquitous: the small 150W focusable fixtures are, well, a fixture on productions big and small and it’s not uncommon to find 10-year-old units still being used to light broadcast TV interviews. They put out a good quality of illumination and they’re really tough to break. They are of course also tungsten hot lights, and although Dedolight’s DLED focusable LED range isn’t new, until now they haven’t had the same following as the originals. The company’s hoping to change that with the introduction of the ‘Turbo’ series of DLED7 lamps.
This is a high quality LED that has the compact size of the original DLED4.1 but with a lot more power. Judging from the demo we had at CVP’s new London showroom (video embedded above) it looks to be every bit as shapeable and controllable as the original Dedos, if not even more so. Of course being an LED it’s possible to run the lamp off batteries as well as mains which should make it even more useful on location.
It also takes most of the accessories from the original Dedo heads including barn doors, gobo projector and filter holders. So migrating to the new lights won’t mean having to throw out your old gear and start from scratch.
There are no published tech specs yet but the lights will be available in daylight balanced and bicolour versions when they launch next week. The single colour DLED7-D Turbo will be priced at £700+VAT and the bi-colour DLED7-Bi Turbo at around £1,000+VAT. So not cheap but potentially a good investment if they last you a decade.
