At IBC Newsshooter’s Elliot Smith looked at the new Steadimate solution that mounts brushless gimbals onto conventional Steadicam arms. Essentially it is a custom clamp that docks the brushless gimbal onto the arm, replacing one of the handgrips. This reduces fatigue by repositioning the weight of the rig to the operator’s core muscles instead of the arms, allowing for extended periods of shooting. The use of an Steadicam arm also reduces the vertical bounce from your step when walking – something that is commonly seen in handheld brushless gimbal shots. It is shown here working with the DJI Ronin although it is expected that other popular gimbals will be supported in the future. The Steadimate should work with the Scout, Zephyr or G50 Steadicam arms.
As you can see in the video the range of motion of the setup is limited due to the arm. Extreme low or high shots will probably require the gimbal to be removed from the arm. There is no word on pricing yet but this looks like an interesting option for existing Steadicam operators who are being asked to use brushless gimbals. It goes up against other gimbal solutions like the EasyRig/Flowcine combination, the Exauss 2 exoskeleton and the Tilta Armorman.
