SmallHD were showing their new daylight viewable 7 inch monitor at the IBC show in Amsterdam. It has a brightness of 1000 NITs coupled with an anti-reflect coating which means that it should make life easier if you are working outdoors. Steadicam and brushless gimbal operators should benefit, as will directors, producers and DPs.
At first glance the 702 Bright looks like a larger version of their popular 501 and 502 models, and in many ways it is just that. It has all the tools that you would expect to find on a high end monitor and is controlled using the same Page Builder OS as the 500 series. Waveform, histogram, peaking, focus assist, false colour and audio level meters are all there.
The monitor has both SDI and HDMI inputs and outputs. It can also cross convert between the two. One feature that is very useful is the ability to add custom lookup tables (LUTs) to flat or Log footage allowing. This can be done to both the image displayed on the 702, and also to the SDI and HDMI outputs for downstream viewing. You can see how it works in the video below:
Another really clever feature is the ability to power the unit from either Canon LP-E or Sony NP type batteries without having to add an extra battery plate. Built right into the back of the monitor is a special dual direction battery mount that can take a Canon battery one way up, or a Sony the other. Two batteries can be connected at the same time to keep you running at all times.
It is available to pre-order now for $1499 US from the SmallHD website.
In addition SmallHD this week announced a new promotion that gives away their Sidewinder EVF attachment for free with the purchase of their 501 and 502 monitors. To qualify simply enter the code FREESIDEFINDER when checking out of the SmallHD webstore.
