The Series 65 Cinema Primes is a full set of 9 vintage lenses that are claimed to be rich in character and they cover Alexa 65, Black Magic Ursa 17K, and the Fujifilm GFX 100 II.
Series 65 Cinema Primes all have a 60mm or larger image circle. That means all focal lengths cover ARRI Alexa 65 open gate, 65mm film (5 perf), or Black Magic Ursa 17K without vignette. No optical expanders or adapters were used, and all lenses are made with genuine vintage optics. The lenses are made by GL Optics.
As sensors get larger there is going to be a greater need for lenses that can cover the image circles. Some companies have been rehousing Hasseblad, Mamiya, or Pentax medium format lenses, but that may not be to everyone’s taste because they were initially designed to get the sharpest cleanest, highest resolution possible for 645, 6×6 and 6×7 film.
Ancient Optics chose to go a different route and they went in search of a look that is rich in vintage character. After several years of obsessive testing together with Mark LaFleur of Old Fast Glass, they came up with the Series 65 Cinema Primes, a complete set of nine vintage 65mm lenses (25, 30, 35, 45, 55, 65, 85, 125, 175). The Series 65 lenses offer high resolution easily resolving all the detail needed for 65mm motion picture formats, but they are claimed to feature an equal amount of character and beauty.
All focal lengths have a 110mm front diameter and stainless steel LPL mounts. The 30mm and 35mm share a close focus distance of 8″. The lenses feature a high gloss black finish and raised metal logo giving them an American classic car aesthetic.
