I caught up with Atomos CEO Jeromy Young to talk about the new DNxHR update to the Atomos Shogun recorder. According to Atomos the Shogun is the first recorder in the world to feature DNxHR. Atomos have also added 3D LUT support and 4K to HD downcovert on the output. One of the problems with the Shogun previously was that if you were inputting 4K into the recorder you couldn’t output a HD signal, the new firmware has rectified that. Jeromy also discusses the optional Sun Hood accessory that is available in black or yellow.
The below video was shot out of a helicopter with the FreeFly Systems Movi M5, the Sony A7s, and the Atomos Shogun recording in 4K.
The 4K Atomos Shogun, combines a 4K/HD ProRes/DNxHR/DNxHD recorder with a 1920×1200 325ppi LCD IPS monitor, playback deck and cut edit suite into a single, touchscreen device. Recording all content to 4:2:2 10-bit, giving the user the choice of HQ/422/LT bit rates and the ability to create Favorite/Reject XML file markers.
The firmware was supposed to be released at the end of February but is not yet available to download from the Atomos website.
