Atlas Lens Co. recently unveiled its new 18mm T2, 135mm T2.2, and 200mm T2.2 Orion 2x anamorphic lenses. I caught up with Dan Kanes to find out more about them.
The 18mm Orion Series is currently the world’s widest-production anamorphic lens. This lens sets a new standard in ultra-wide angle perspective and it has a very close focus of 18” / 45.72cm. The 140º horizontal field-of-view gives it the widest horizontal field-of-view of any Cinemascope format 35mm motion picture camera lens in production.
Imager Coverage: 4-Perf Film for 2.40:1 Cinemascope Aspect Ratio Deliverable. 16:9 from Alexa LF Format mode (full Height) Covers full-frame formats edge-to-edge with Atlas 1.6x LF Extender & Atlas 1.4x LF Extender.
The 135mm Orion allows for close-up shots from a distance, while the 200mm is now the longest focal length in the Orion series.
The 135mm T2.2 weighs 8.8 lbs / 3.99kg and it has a minimum focusing distance of 3.5 feet / 106.68 cm.
The lens covers well beyond Anamorphic 4 Perf Film Format into 2.40:1 delivery in Full Frame on both film and digital camera systems.
The 200mm T2.2 weighs 9 lbs / 4kg and it has a minimum focusing distance of 3.5 feet / 106.68 cm.
The lens covers edge-to-edge full-frame (FF), large format (LF), or Vistavision on both film and digital camera systems. It can become a 280mm by adding the Atlas 1.4x Expander or a 320mm in combination with the 1.6x LF Extender. If you use the 2X Telephoto Extender it will become a 400mm.
The new lenses join the existing 21mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 80mm, and 10mm in the series.
The Atlas Lens Co. Orion Series utilize a true front-anamorphic group. They offer vintage optical characteristics and they cover slightly larger than S35 image circles.
