“I had so much fun shooting with this camera, because it really opened up doors for me in terms of lenses. It was great to be able to use a lot of lenses that I probably wouldn’t have thought of using, or they would have been too hard to use on a job. Having an L mount camera actually gives me more choices as a cinematographer, because I can now enjoy experimenting with all of these different lens possibilities. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is really a multi format camera being able to shoot 3:2 6048 x 4032 in 6K, 6:5 Anamorphic 4838 x 4032 and regular Super 35 4:3 4096 x 3072. If you’re going for a certain look, then having that larger image circle of 43.18mm means that it works with so many lenses that are out there.”
Hotel Room in Open Gate 6K
“This setup was deliberately designed as a torture test for this camera to see exactly what this new sensor could handle in terms of dynamic range. It doesn’t get any harder than trying to balance the light from outside with inside, especially given we were shooting just after midday.”

Kicking Up the Dust in 4K DCI
“With this test shot, I really wanted to explore the higher frame rates in both 4K DCI and 1920 x 1080. Slow motion like this either works or it doesn’t, so it’s a great test for this camera. Even at 1080 HD at 120fps it really held up well. This version was shot at 4K DCI 4096 x 2160 at 60fps which I think is a great number to hit and it really looks good!”

Girl at Diner in Open Gate 6K
“The thing I liked about this scene is the great mix of color. You’ve got the color tubes in the background and all of those highlights coming through the windows. Her skin tones are sitting in the lower part of the exposure range and yet they are very full and rich. It’s a very thick looking image with plenty of range to work with.”

Diner at Night in Open Gate 6K
“With this shot I used the Zeiss Supreme naked with no filtering whatsoever. When you are trying to shoot in low light, it’s not simply a matter of shooting wide open. What you really want is high contrast between the darkness and the lights that are on in the frame. In this case I was trying to expose between the red neons and not having them clip while still getting enough detail in the shadows.

On the Phone in Open Gate 6K
“This shot was actually quite late at night. And so I had Jessica Clark-Nash with me, who actually lit this scene ahead of me while I was still working inside. I think it’s a really nice commercial and clean looking image with a traditional contrast ratio lit for drama to give it that impactful look.”

At the Bar in Open Gate 6K
“For this particular scene we decided to mix it up and try a native L mount Sigma Art 28mm photo prime in open gate at ISO 400. It is very impressive with this sensor. The differences between Sigmas cine primes and these photo lenses are not so much visual, but more to do with pulling focus.
