At IBC this year my curiosity was piqued when I saw kilted Scotsmen promoting what appeared to be a bendy nightlight. On closer inspection this turned out to be a unique LED light from Blind Spot called the Scorpion.
The Scorpion is a relatively powerful 13W LED head on the end of a flexible gooseneck arm which can be attached to a Manfrotto-style clamp via a spigot, or alternatively screwed into any standard 1/4” 20 thread mount. There is a dimmer unit on each Scorpion that controls the light output precisely. This in turn is connected via mini XLR jacks to an external battery with a D-tap, DC power, or a mains power source. Blind Spot offer their own battery plate that runs the light from common Sony NP-F type batteries.
There are two versions – daylight or tungsten balanced. Blind Spot claim high colour accuracy with a CRI of over 90 for the tungsten version.
There are barn doors on each light and also a multi-region power supply. The unique design allows for easy mounting in hard to access or unusual places, as well as on top of camera rigs or even brushless gimbals.
These lights started as a Kickstarter project and are now ready for mass production. For more details head over to the Blind Spot website.
