IBC 2014 video: Convergent Design working on 4K HDMI solutions for their external recorders

By technical editor Matt Allard:

Mitch Gross from Convergent Design was at IBC in Amsterdam last week and I had a chance to talk to him about the upcoming developments in the Odyssey line of external recorders.

Already a popular choice for shooters wanting to record 4K outputs from cameras like the FS700, new firmware means the Odyssey can now record 4K to ProRes over HD-SDI (quad for now but it will be dual-link soon). Even though Sony are now going to offer paid internal Apple ProRes recording options for the F5/55 the external recorder route will still be significantly cheaper, with the added benefit of being 4K capable.

Purchasers of the new FS7 will be interested to know that if they own Convergent’s existing Sony record option for their FS700, it will work with the new camera without additional cost.

Convergent Design also plan to enable 4K recording over HDMI 2.0 in the near future – something that will be music to the ears of Sony a7S and Panasonic GH4 owners waiting for a solution from the company.

Lastly Gross told us that user-provided look up tables (LUTs) to allow accurate monitoring of flat picture styles is also coming to the Odyssey line.
