BB&S Area 48 Review from Matthew Allard ACS on Vimeo.
For news and documentary shooters a good key light should be one of the most important pieces of kit you own. If you’re like me, then you’ll be using lights on a regular basis and the type and quality of the light you own can make a big difference. I have been using the Brother, Brother and Sons (BB&S) Area 48 light for more than a year now, and I wanted to share my thoughts on how I have found it in the field.
The Area 48 uses remote phosphor technology, which moves the phosphor away from the LED itself, greatly improving colour rendering, consistency and light output. Remote phosphor still uses LED lights but in a completely different way. This enables you to get one large light source, instead of many individual light sources that are associated with regular LED lights. The result is a really nice soft light that seems to wrap around peoples faces.
There are a few small drawbacks to this light that I explain in the video, but the positive aspects really do make it an outstanding light. I have used it as my main key light for almost all my work, so it goes without saying that I find it a great solution for my needs.
