During Adobe MAX in October, Adobe announced its new integration with the RED V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL cameras which unlocks the ability to get 8K REDCODE RAW files directly from the camera to the cloud. Well, today you can now download the Beta firmware.
To be able to take advantage of this workflow you need a RED V-RAPTOR or V-RAPTOR XL, a paid Frame.io or Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, and a high-bandwidth internet connection. Beyond that, there’s no additional hardware or software required.
According to Adobe, they have tested the workflow extensively and during these tests they were able to send the first-ever automatic transmission of an 8K RAW R3D file, a CDL, a ProRes proxy file, a WAV, and a custom LUT associated with each take directly to the cloud (this was 4TB of 8K RAW) right to Frame.io without ever having to download the camera media.
Now, there are of course caveats with sending anything to the cloud and you need to have a very fast internet connection with speeds of 800 Mbps and up to be able to do this. If you don’t have very fast internet then it is far easier to just send ProRes proxies which require speeds of around 80Mbps. While sending ProRes proxies might be fine you still have to send the original camera media to whoever happens to be working on it.
Another new feature of the integration is that the system can accurately capture off-speed recording.
Sending material directly from a camera via an internet connection is nothing new and broadcasters have been doing this for many, many years, albeit at lower resolutions and bitrates.
