Sony has become the exclusive imaging product provider for the Canadian Press. The switch to Sony will mean the photojournalists and videographers at The Canadian Press will use a variety of Sony cameras and lenses including the Sony Alpha 1 and Alpha 9 II.
If you are not familiar with The Canadian Press, they have been around for more than 100 years and are the exclusive Canadian distributor of international news from The Associated Press. The Canadian Press consists of more than 180 journalists who produce, package and deliver real-time, bilingual news articles, photos, graphics, video and audio clips for use in newspapers, magazines, radio and TV newscasts, websites, company blogs, social channels, etc.
The roll out of Sony imaging kits to Canadian Press journalists is already in progress, with distribution planned throughout early 2022.
The Canadian Press now joins USA TODAY, Gannett, and the Associated Press as news organizations that have also chosen Sony as their provider for cameras and lenses. It is not overly surprising to see so many news agencies that previously used Canon and Nikon, switch to Sony. With the increased demand for video, more and more news agencies are looking to equip their photojournalists with mirrorless hybrid cameras.
What you should be aware of is that large imaging companies have always done deals with News agencies and broadcasters to kit them out with equipment. Often these deals are done via a tender process and the decision usually comes down to budget, after-sales support, and pre-existing relationships.
