Sony has just announced the FE 35mm F1.4 GM (SEL35F14GM) to it’s G Master line up of lenses.
At Sony, our purpose is to fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology so we designed the FE 35mm F1.4 GM to perfectly capture the moments that need to be saved forever
Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing, Digital Imaging, Sony Europe.
The lens is quite compact with dimensions of 76 x 96mm, weighing only 524 grams. For an F1.4 lens, this is quite light. It also has a Φ67mm thread for adding filters.
The lens has 10 groups for a total of 14 elements. Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and an ED glass element help suppress chromatic aberration and purple fringing.
With an 11-blade aperture, the lens should deliver smooth and circular bokeh.
A minimum focus distance of 27cm will deliver reasonable magnification for a 35mm prime lens.
Autofocus Motors
The lens uses two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors to provide fast and accurate autofocus. The lens does look to be a drive-by-wire type like a number of Sony’s other lenses.
Lens Control
The lens offers manual control with the aperture ring with a de-click switch for smooth video exposure transitions.
A focus hold button is also configurable in camera.
Being a G Master lens, it is weather-sealed and has a fluorine front element coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants.
Pricing and Availability
The new FE 35mm F1.4 GM will be available end of January, at a variety of Sony’s authorised dealers, for an estimated retail price of £1,500/€1,700/$1,398 USD.

The Sigma (755g) & Distagon (630g) lenses are much larger and heavier than the new G Master (524g).
