One of the products that I have been eagerly awaiting since the NAB show earlier this year is the G-technology G-DOCK ev expandable Thunderbolt drive. The concept is brilliant: it starts with the G-Drive ev, which is a fast 1TB 7200rpm USB 3.0 drive that you can use as a standalone in the field or for distribution to clients. It can transfer data at speeds up to 136MB/s. The G-Drive ev can then be docked into the G-DOCK ev. This is essentially a central hub for the G-Drive ev which connects to your computer via Thunderbolt and which can carry two ev units at the same time. The benefit of this is that you can be up and running at blisteringly fast Thunderbolt speeds the moment you get back to base.
There is also the G-Drive ev PLUS which is a slightly larger drive that also plugs directly into the G-DOCK ev. The ev PLUS internally is actually two 7200rpm drives in a RAID 0 configuration for even faster performance reaching 250MB/s.
What I plan to do is to make a pair of G-Drive ev PLUSes my regular drives for field work on my Macbook Pro. One will be my working drive and the other a redundant copy. On returning to the office I will simply plug the G-Drive ev into the dock and connect it via Thunderbolt to my 27 inch iMac and continue working. Later I can simply archive the G-Drives or copy them to slower bare drives depending on the project.
I’m totally hooked on Thunderbolt drives. At the moment I run a pair of 8TB G-Raid Thunderbolt drives for primary video storage on my iMac in my office. I don’t think I could go back to Firewire 800 again.
Here’s the video interview I did with G-technology at NAB:

If you want a chance to win a G-Dock EV setup and a grand prize of $5000, then have a look at entering G-technology’s Driven Creativity competition. There are Pro and Amateur sections with several categories suitable for readers of this blog. The competition runs to the end of October but is only open to US residents. There is a parallel competition for some other European countries here.
