At NAB 2025 in Las Vegas, a new company called Betty was showing its patent-pending Luminous Reflectors. They are being touted as scalable, rugged, and talent-friendly lighting reflectors.
You may be thinking, oh no, another set of reflectors, but the Betty Luminous Reflectors are quite unique. They only come in one strength of diffusion, and that was decided after rigorous testing and consultation with well-known gaffers and DPs. They use a micropolymer coating that includes a lot of different components to make micro specular reflections to distribute light. They are heavier than other options on the market as they are made out of 18-gauge steel.
They are also scalable, so you can connect multiple reflectors together to create arrays of any size.
Unlike a lot of current solutions on the market, they don’t easily scratch, and they are very fingerprint resistant. Betty has also put the same coatings on both sides of the reflectors. If you do happen to damage one, you can get a new coating applied by sending it in.
The Betty Luminous Reflectors were designed by a team that built custom solutions for NASA, and the whole concept behind them was to create human-flattering, full-spectrum lighting reflectors.
They feature Fresnel-like directionality and a gentle Gaussian fall-off.
DPs such as Larry Sher are currently using the Betty Luminous Reflectors on a Charlize Theron feature film that is currently being filmed in Australia. Steven Spielberg’s new movie with Emily Blunt that is currently in production is also using the panels.
The larger of the two reflector plates is 50 square centimeters. The magnetic plates can be mounted individually, in a yoke, and to speed rails or lighting grids
They can accommodate magnetic LED lights and diffractors, as well as non-magnetic reflectors using a quick-change adapter. Flux 4X is the same size as a traditional shiny board, but it fits into a pelican-style wheeled case to stow in the trunk of any compact car.
Because they are made out of 18-gauge steel, you can also attach other reflectors on the market directly to the Betty Luminous Reflectors via a mount they have created.
