Sony Teases What Appears to be a VENICE Extension System Mini – FX9 Now Discontinued

It’s that time of year! Companies are pre-releasing and teasing new products before NAB 2025, and I’m happy to see this! Matt and I will be at NAB 2025 with our team as usual, covering the show, and it’s always great to have something to get excited about.

New product announcement on March 26th 2025 Sony 1

Today, Sony teased what looks like a VENICE Extension System that will be announced on March 26th, 2025. Going smaller and more compact than the original is a great idea. I thought the extension design was a good one as it allows the camera to be used in tight locations, and the user can distribute the weight for flexibility by having the sensor and lens mount separate from the camera body.

The current VENICE Extension System 2 System is fully compatible with VENICE 2 using the 8K or 6K sensors, while also supporting the original VENICE camera with extended 12-m cable length. The Extension System also has an HD-SDI output and a 24-V output for powering accessories such as lens servo motors and monitoring. Multiple screw holes on all surfaces make it easy to accessorize and fit onto a wide variety of rigs while the main weight of the camera can be supported elsewhere.

FX6 Update?

Sony FX6

One camera that is due for an update is the FX6. It has received several firmware updates and continues to get them. It’s still a solid camera if you bought one today for many users; it’s more than enough, but new features and improved ergonomics are always welcome upgrades.

According to B&H, the FX9 has been discontinued, so the FX6 is the only one left in the FX larger-body cinema cameras.

What do you think Sony has up its sleeve with the specifications for the VENICE Extension System Mini? Will a new FX9 MKII be coming soon?
