Atomos announces new Shinobi GO Monitor

Atomos has announced the new Shinobi GO Monitor, a slim, lightweight, high brightness, 5-inch 1500nit HDR monitor that’s being targeted at content creators and photographers.

Shinobi GO joins the Shinobi II that was announced last year. It features some of the same high-quality monitoring tools as the Shinobi II but without camera control, touch-to-focus, and other pro monitoring functions such as EL ZONE. It does, however, still feature professional monitoring tools like false color, zebra, histogram, waveform, and vectorscope.

Below is what the Shinobi GO doesn’t have when compared to the Shinobi II:

  • NO camera control over USB-C or LANC
  • NO ARRI / RED gamma or gamut options from the Log/HDR feature in the Input menu
  • NO ARRI false color or EL ZONE System in false color modes
  • NO anamorphic de-squeeze option
  • NO on-device calibration option from the Info menu
  • NO 4K DCI (4096 x 2160) input resolution support
RED 9

It can be powered by Sony NP-F type batteries or via the USB-C port using a power bank.

“Shinobi GO is designed for people who either do not need camera control or own a camera that supports it. It offers a high-quality, daylight viewable monitor at an affordable price.”

The monitor comes with a locking connector adaptor for the HDMI and USB-C ports. When used in conjunction with Atomos locking cables (purchased separately) it prevents accidental disconnections during shoots.

Both Shinobi GO and Shinobi II share the same size sun hood and other accessories, allowing users to share batteries, cables, rigs, and other attachments.

Price & Availability

The Atomos Shinobi GO retails for $249 USD (EUR 249, GBP 215, AUD 399), and it is now available to buy from the Atomos web store and from authorized resellers.

As a price comparison, the Shinobi II retails for $349 USD.

Thoughts

This is an interesting move by Atomos and we are starting to see a lot more companies now starting to venture into the entry-level content creator space with more affordable products. For its intended target audience, the Shinobi GO arguably offers the key features that most people are looking for.
