Sony has announced its new FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS telephoto zoom. The FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS is Sony’s longest zoom lens to date and it was designed primarily for wildlife, sports, and birding enthusiasts.

Key features
- FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS Lens:
- Full-Frame | f/6.3-8 Maximum Aperture
- G Series Super-Telephoto Zoom
- Dual Linear Motors, Internal Focus
- Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
- 1.4x & 2x Teleconverter Compatibility
- Fixed, Rotating Tripod Collar
It is a follow-up to the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens. Sony is giving you extra reach at the expense of a slower aperture.

The lens weighs in at 5.45 lb / 2.47 kg and it has physical dimensions of 4.72 x 13.6″ / 11.98 x 34.6 cm.
To keep the size and weight down, you need to compromise when it comes to the speed of the lens. With a f/6.3-8 aperture range, this lens could be a challenge to use in certain lighting conditions, but a lot of mirrorless hybrids can shoot at quite high ISO levels with very little noise. If Sony made this lens F/4-5.6 then it would have been significantly larger, heavier, and cost considerably more.
This lens features internal zoom for improved functionality as well as dual linear motors for smooth, quick AF performance. Optical SteadyShot stabilization includes three distinct modes, along with a focus limiter and three focus hold buttons for advanced control. For increased lens stability and sharper imagery, a fixed, rotating tripod foot is included on the lens.
Not only is this the first Alpha zoom to reach 800mm, but its compatibility with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters extends the maximum focal length to 1120mm and 1600mm respectively
Canon has an RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM Lens that has been around for a while now. It has a slightly slower f-stop at the long end, but it also has a much longer focal range.
SIGMA has the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports Lens which is a very good option if you are looking for a very versatile super telephoto zoom.
