DZOFilm has announced its new X-Tract 18-28mm T8 FF Probe Zoom Lens. We have now started to see quite a few companies making probe lenses that are similar in form factor to what Laowa has been doing for years. What makes the DZOFIlm version different is that it is a zoom probe lens.
According to DZOFilm, the name ‘X-tract’ is inspired by the word ‘extract,’ meaning ‘to draw out the essence.’ The lens’s design allows it to easily access narrow, hidden spaces, capturing microscopic details that can be invisible to the naked eye
Key features
- Full Frame | T8 Maximum Aperture
- Innovative Probe Zoom for Close-Ups
- 0.8 MOD FIZ Gears, 300° Focus Rotation
- 2.1:1 Image Magnification
- Versatile 73 to 100° Angle of View
- Minimum Focus: 0.24″
- <1.2″ Front Outside Diameter
- Compact 16.3″ Length
- ED and HRI Elements Reduce Aberrations
- Waterproof, Dustproof, and Anti-Fog
It combines a T8 large aperture, wide-angle zoom macro capabilities, and what DZOFilm is calling a spacecraft-inspired design.
The lens has a maximum magnification ratio of 2.1:1, and minimum focusing distance is reduced from the traditional 56.3cm (1’11”) of probe lenses to 47.3cm (1’6″), with a minimum working distance of just 6mm (0.2″). It weighs just 1.09 kg, has a length of 41.5 cm, and a front diameter of 29.6 mm. As you would expect, it also has 0.8 pitch gears.
The native PL mount features rear elements that protrude just 1.37 cm from the mounting flange. This short rear protrusion is compatible with DZOFILM Octopus and most PL-E/RF/LPL adapters and Speedboosters. An Interchangeable EF mount will be available soon.
The X-tract 18-28mm T8 0° lens features 7 high-refractive-index (HRI) lenses and 6 extra-low-dispersion (ED) lenses, which DZOFilm claims strikes an optimal balance between size and weight while minimizing chromatic aberrations, distortions, and optical flaws common in probe lenses. Its innovative differential distribution of HRI lens is said to deliver prime-level image quality and accurate color temperature, effectively reducing the yellowish tint commonly seen in other probe lenses. Distortion is claimed to be kept within ±2% across the entire zoom range, with near-zero distortion and focus breathing at 24mm.
The lens features a 300° focus throw and a parfocal design. The X-tract series also has what DZOFilm refers to as native breath control, which is said to reduce breathing effects to just 0.5% at 24mm (compared to 39.2% in other 24mm probe primes). With a relative illumination (RI) of 70.7% (vs. 54.9% in other 24mm probe primes), focus breathing becomes virtually imperceptible.
It is constructed from aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, and a 25μm anodized coating enhances the body’s hardness, improving abrasion resistance and corrosion protection. It is claimed to have been tested under extreme temperatures from -30°C to 70°C, to ensure stability and durability in challenging shooting environments. It also has IP57-rated dust and water resistance, and the lens body is waterproof to over 28 cm. The front lens element features a hydrophobic anti-fog coating, reducing water and fog accumulation.
Price & Availability
The DZOFilm X-Tract 18-28mm T8 FF Probe Zoom Lens is expected to start shipping on the 20th of January for $3,499 USD.
Laowa has also announced its upcoming Zoom Probe Lens with an Ultra-Wide 15mm perspective, wider focal range, and the ability to shoot from more dynamic angles. There is no indication yet when that lens will ship or how much it will cost.
