SWISS RIG has announced sr RAW Cinema Camera, which for the first time, adds RAW cinema recording to the Apple iPhone.
sr RAW was designed and engineered with an interface that was made to be simple for fast mobile phone production while allowing for creative control in post-production. With the same workflow used in Hollywood and independent films, music videos, documentaries, shorts, television and creator productions, sr RAW’s high-end “digital negatives” are unprocessed for an end-to-end non-destructive workflow.
Other phone camera applications, including those that offer Apple ProRes and Log color space, record processed video which can bake in unwanted image characteristics including sharpness, noise, ISO, white balance and tones. These characteristics are permanently in the master video file which can limit post-production options.
According to SWISS RIG, sr RAW represents a quantum leap in image quality and post-production creativity. Their capture engine encodes the unprocessed image sensor and writes 14-bit, open standard RAW CinemaDNGs. At the same time, an uncompressed stereo WAV audio file is recorded as well as a lightweight field proxy. Now, you do need to keep in mind that recording in CinemaDNG is going to take up a massive amount of hard drive spacer, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend trying to use this when recording internally on an iPhone. You really need to attach an external USB-C drive when using it. You are also limited to 1080p and you cannot capture 4K RAW.
You can connect your iPhone via USB-C to transfer sr RAW files for editing and color grading, including native integration with the free and Studio versions of DaVinci Resolve.
sr RAW was made for filmmakers, content creators, professionals, enthusiasts, students, and first time RAW cinema shooters.
