Viltrox has officially announced its new LUNA 30-300mm T4 Zoom ahead of Cinegear 2024. This is the first lens in the series and it will eventually be joined by a 22-220mm T2.8 S35 Luna zoom, as well as a large zoom that will cover 65mm sensors.
The LUNA 30-300mm T4 will be mounted on a camera at the Viltrox booth (Midwest and French Streets #269) at Cine Gear so attendees will be able to test out the lens themselves.
We first saw a prototype of this lens at NAB a few months ago. Above you can see my interview with Viltrox at the show.
Viltrox told me that it was created as a statement lens to showcase optical quality at the highest level.
The lens has a constant T4 aperture across the entire zoom range and it covers image circles of up to 46.5mm.
The lens perfectly covers full-frame sensors without vignetting, even at the extreme ends of the zoom range. With a 46.5mm image circle diameter, it also ensures comprehensive coverage for larger formats like ARRI LF and RED VV:
FF: 36.00mm x 24.00mm
LF: 36.70mm x 21.54mm
VV: 40.96mm x 21.60mm
The Luna 30-300mm T4 weighs in at a whopping 33 lbs / 15 kg.
To get another reference as to just how big it is, above you can see it next a Viltrox 75mm 1.33x anamorphic lens.
With a constant T4.0 aperture throughout the 30-300mm focal range, the lens ensures consistent brightness and shallow depth of field. It has an 8-blade diaphragm, that is claimed to produce pleasing bokeh.
Structural Advantages
- Adjustable Flange Focal Distance: The rear focus flexibility allows for precise adjustments to match various cinema cameras.
- Parfocal Design: The focus plane remains consistent throughout the zoom range, ensuring sharp focus is maintained while zooming.
- Stable Focus: No noticeable vertical shift during focusing.
- Smooth Zooming: Precise and even zooming for professional-grade shooting.
- Magnetic Filter Attachment: Easy and reliable filter changes with a magnetic system.
- Integrated Handle and 3/8″ Threaded Base: Enhances portability and ease of use.
The front diameter of the lens is 165mm. The minimum object distance is 1.26m / 4ft 2in.
Vilrox is targeting the lens at wildlife and sports shooters and they have already had interest from NASCAR.
Price & Availability
The Viltrox Luna 30-300mm T4 Full Frame Zoom Lens will be available at it will retail for around $65,000 USD. While that sounds like a lot of money, for a lens with this focal range and aperture that covers a 46.5mm image circle it is actually reasonably priced.
