The Feelworld S7 7-inch 12G-SDI Camera Field Monitor is one of the first on-camera budget monitors that I am aware of to feature a 12G-SDI input.
FEELWORLD has some unusual marketing about the importance of having a 12G-SDI input. They state that ‘Instead of having to use 4 x 3G-SDI cables to get 4K video image, you only need a single 12G-SDI, and get rid of the awkward situation of monitoring 2K while shooting 4K.’ I am not sure who was ever using 4 x 3G-SDI cables to get 4K video image into an on-board camera monitor.
There have been affordable monitors around for many years that have been able to receive a 4K signal over HDMI. In saying all of this it is nice to see a budget brand monitor with 12G-SDI and compatibility with 6G-SDI/3G-SDI/HD-SDI/SD-SDI.
The S7 can not only handle SD, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI sources, but it can also simultaneously loop-out high quality broadcast video images which is handy for certain applications.
The S7 features 1920 x 1080 7-inch IPS pane with 1600 nits of brightness and a 160° wide viewing angle.
It has a 1200:1 contrast ratio and the screen is listed as 10-Bit, but it isn’t a true 10-bit display, instead, it features the commonly used 10-bit (8+2). Some potential buyers may find this a little disappointing given the high cost of the monitor. However, what you should clearly know is that no panels with true 10-bit color exist in this size, everyone just uses dithering to achieve the 10-bit target. 10-bit (8+2) is pretty much imperceptible to 99% of people
The touch screen LCD user interface allows you to access the menu and make changes. You can use simple tap and swipe gestures for the important monitoring functions without buttons. You can also operate via scroll wheel key.
Professional CalMAN Software Calibration & DCI-P3 Cinema Color Gamut
Each monitor under goes color calibration via CALMAN professional software prior to leaving the factory, to ensure color accuracy and good reproduction. The S7 also covers 94.9% DCI-P3 color gamut.
Aluminium Housing
The S7 utilizes a CNC aluminum housing.
Shortcut Keys
On top of the S7 there are three custom shortcut buttons which you can assign to various functions.
Load Custom 3D LUTs
You could use built-in LUTS for popular Log formats or upload .cube files. You can internally load up to 32 custom LUTs via the SD Card Slot.
The HDMI and 3G-SDI can both output the video or image with 3D LUT applied.
Note: To use HDMI with LUT output, you need to set the HDMI output to “display” (enter main menu–System–Source–Output Source–HDMI OUT–Display)
HDR Monitoring
When HDR is activated, the display is claimed to be able to reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity, allowing lighter and darker details to be displayed more clearly. You can choose from HLG1, HLG2, or HLG3.
Monitoring Assist Functions
You can choose from waveform (RGB Parade, YUV Parade, Y Parade), vector scope, histogram, audio phase and level displays. These functions can be opened separately, and there is also support to open all the scopes at once.
The S7 can de-embedded audio from SDI and HDMI. Under HDMI, you can select 2 channels, 4 channels, 8 channels audio meters display; under SDI, you can select 2 channels, 4 channels,8 channels, 16 channels audio meters display. You also can move the meters to either a horizontal or vertical position.
HDMI and SDI Cross Conversion
The S7 features built-in signal cross conversion, that allows you to convert HDMI to SDI signal or SDI to HDMI signal.
3-color TALLY Light
The S7 including tally light, it can display in red, green or yellow tally signal. The Tally is connected via an industry standard parallel pin connector on the rear panel.
Power
You can connect to DC power input to get continuous power or use the standard F970 dual battery plate to install NP-F series batteries. One F970 battery (6600mah) is claimed to be able to power the monitor for about 3 hours.
An optional V-mount battery plate is also available.
Mounting
The monitor is equipped with 3 1/4-20″ mounting threads (bottom, right side, left side).
A mini hot shoe mount adapter can be used to attach the monitor to a camera monitor.
