SIGMA has announced its new 50mm F1.2 F1.2 DG DN | Art. The lens is being touted as a compact, ultra-fast standard prime lens for full-frame mirrorless camera systems. SIGMA also states that 50mm F1.2 achieves the highest level of performance among successive generations of Art lenses.
The optical construction of the lens consists of 17 elements in 12 groups (4 aspherical elements) and it features SIGMA’s first 13-blade aperture.
The lens weighs in at 745g / 26.3 oz. and it has physical dimensions of 81.0 x 108.8mm / 3.2. x 4.3″. It is 30% smaller than the SIGMA 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens, and is very similar in size and weight to the SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens. It also has a 72mm front filter diameter and a minimum focussing distance of 40cm / 15.8″.
SIGMA claims that the lens has excellent correction of various aberrations such as spherical aberration, sagittal coma flare, and axial chromatic aberration.
A dual HLA-driven floating focusing system, with one group near the front of the lens and one group near the back, is said to provide stable optical performance from close to distant focus. This design also helps to minimizes focus breathing. The dual floating HLA autofocus also allows for fast and smooth focus and silent operation. A manual focus ring can be assigned to be linear or non-linear response on compatible L-Mount cameras.
