OWC discovered that 20TB Toshiba drives on macOS were showing lower-than-expected write performance when used with RAID 5 enclosures. In RAID 0 setups there were no issues, but in RAID 5, which is important for video editors, the performance was sub-par. OWC decided to reach out directly to TOSHIBA to find a solution.
After a collaborative process with Toshiba’s Quality Assurance team they managed to come up with a fix. This fix improved RAID 5 performance by 23%. OWC’s ThunderBay 8 RAID solution when used with Apple silicon Macs produced a maximum write speed of 1965 MB/s while maintaining an average write speed of 1727 MB/s. This increased speed boost is welcome news to video editors.
OWC uses TOSHIBA as its preferred drive vendor for all OWC storage products because of its drive reliability and quiet operation. At least in my opinion, it is always good when companies who are making hard drive enclosures have a tight relationship with the vendor that is making the hard drives that they use. This improves reliability and compatibility as you know that the company has done the hard work of testing and making sure that the drives and enclosures work well together.
