Zacuto has announced its new Micro Boom. They are touting it as being the world’s first lightweight, on-camera audio boom pole.
The tagline for the Micro Boom is “’Get that boom sound without the boom operator!’ The Micro Boom weighs 5 oz / 140g, and it was designed for use with DSLR, mirrorless, ENG cameras, Cinema Cameras, and smartphones using the Zacuto Smart Z-Finder rig system.
Key features
- Camera mounted
- Quick-release
- Adjustable length (14-35″) and angle
- Ultra lightweight 5 oz.
- Internal cable
- Rotatable mounting extension
- Telescoping carbon fiber
- Multiple mounting options to attach to your camera- cold shoe, NATO Rail
- Coldshoe to attach microphones
- Moves with and travels with the camera
The boom pole features internal cabling, and it has the ability to extend from 14″ to 35″ / 35.56cm to 88.9cm. You can mount it via a cold shoe, NATO Rail, or ENG mounting plate.
The Micro Boom looks like an interesting solution for single operators conducting interviews or anyone who is gathering content for social media, news, events, etc.
While this is an interesting concept I am not sure how practical it would be to use in the real world. If the camera is on your shoulder I wonder how easy it is to adjust with one hand. You certainly don’t want to walk around at an event or areas where there are lots of people with a boom pole protruding from your camera.
