Venus Optics has announced the new Laowa 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine. The lens is the widest rectilinear lens in their S35 line-up, and it is claimed to be able to produce a “Zero-Distortion” image even with its 123° perspective.
The 7.5mm T2.9 is available in Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Fuji X mounts.
Above you can see some footage taken with the lens.
The lens could be used in situations where you have very limited space or need to capture a very wide perspective. When Venus Optics talks about
close to “Zero-Distortion” they are referring to the ability of the lens to behave in a rectilinear way where straight lines stay straight. While straight lines might stay straight. you are going to get a lot of perspective distortion on a lens that is this wide.
The 7.5mm T2.9 lens has a close focusing distance of 25 cm / 9.84” The optical construction of the lens consists of 16 elements in 10 groups, with two pieces of Extra- low Dispersion (ED) glass and two pieces of aspherical glass. Venus Optics claims that the lens effectively controls chromatic aberration.
As the lens doesn’t feature a dome-shaped front element you can attach a 77mm screw-in filter directly.
The lens is 3.17” / 8.7cm long and weighs less than 1.4 lb / 610g. This small size allows for it to be used on stabilizations systems, including handheld gimbals.
