Canon has announced the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. This is being touted as an ‘affordable entry-level’ telephoto zoom lens.
This may seem like an odd release given Canon already makes a Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM Lens. Despite both lenses having similar focal lengths and variable apertures, the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is a more affordable lens that is being targeted at a different user. It doesn’t feature the L designation and it has been designed to complement the RF 600 f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM lenses.
Size & Weight
The RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM tips the scales at 635g / 22.39 oz. As a comparison, the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM weighs 1.365 kg / 3 lb /.
Other Features
The lens offers up to 6 stops of coordinated IS when used with cameras such as the EOS R5, R5, and new R3.
It features a NANO USM that Canon claims will help produce fast and responsive AF performance.
The minimum focusing distance at 200mm is 88cm / 2.88′.
The optical design consists of 12 elements in 9 groups, and the lens has 9 aperture blades.
Just like the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM. the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM works with Canon’s RF 1.4x and 2x extenders.
