Laowa has announced the Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO, the first lens in its new ‘Argusโ line‘. The name Argus comes from Greek mythology and is the name of a vigilant guardian with a hundred eyes and an all-seeing sight.
Laowa is no stranger to making interesting and unique lenses, and the ‘Argus’ line looks to follow that same philosophy. Yes, there have been plenty of fast prime lenses made over the years, but not with interesting focal lengths.
The Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO has been designed specifically for use with APS-C cameras. It is 3.26โ / 83mm long and weighs in at 590 g / 1.3 lbs. The lens is available in Fuji X, Nikon Z, and Canon RF mounts.
Key features
- f/0.95 Ultra-fast aperture
- APO (Apochromatic Optical Design)
- 35cm closest focusing distance
- Exquisite bokeh
- Long focus throw
- Internal focus
- Low focus breathing
- Stepless aperture ring APO (Apochromatic Optical Design)
The optical design consists of one extra-low dispersion element, one aspherical lens, and three ultra-high refraction elements to suppress both lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration. It also features 9 circular aperture blades that are claimed to produce smooth, round bokeh with no hard edges. It has a minimum focus distance of 35cm (1.15 feet) and a 62mm front filter thread.
According to Laowa, they have worked hard to minimize the focus breathing. The 33mm also has a long focus throw of 300ยฐ and a clickless aperture. An internal focus optics design has been adopted so that the lens will not extend in length during focusing. As this lens is being targeted for both video and still use these are all welcome additions.
