Olympus releases OM-D E-M5 Mark III

Olympus has just released its latest OM-D mirrorless camera with the E-M5 Mark III. The E-M5 series sits is in the middle of their OM-D micro four-thirds range of cameras, in between the E-M10 & E-M1 & E-M1X.

The biggest improvements to the Mark III over its predecessor is the new 20.4MP Live MOS sensor, TruePic™ VIII Quad Core Processor and auto-focus system.

Olympus has never been a strong contender when it comes to video, focussing more on photo capture but the new E-M5 Mark III does offer 4K video capture up to 30 fps with a flat picture mode.

The E-M5 Mark III is basically the same size and weight as the Mark II, maintaining it’s very compact size but offers updated internals, ergonomics for better performance.

Video resolutions

As we mentioned above, video features have never been a strong point for the Olympus OM-D cameras but they do have decent capabilities for those who primarily do photography but want to occasionally record video.

The OM-D E-M5 can capture video in the following formats using MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codecs:

4096×2160(C4K) / 24p / IPB(approx.237Mbps)
3840×2160(4K) / 30p, 25p, 24p / IPB(approx.102Mbps)
1920×1080(FHD) / 30p, 25p, 24p / ALL-I (A-I), IPB(SF, F, N)
1920×1080(FHD) / 60p, 50p / IPB(SF, F, N)
1280×720(HD) / 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, 24p / ALL-I (A-I) , IPB(SF ,F ,N)

There is no LOG profiles but it does have the ability to record in a ‘Flat’ picture mode with a LUT file available for download from the website.

Optional ECG-5 Grip Extension

The optional ECG-5 external grip is available for $169 USD and gives you shutter release and a control dial for enhanced handling and stability. It attaches to the camera via 1/4″-20 mount.
