At CP+ 2019 in Japan Canon was showing 6 new RF mount lenses. The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 85mm f/1.2L USM, RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS, and the RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM Lens.
We weren’t able to try or even touch these news lenses, as they were all under a glass cover. All six RF lenses that under development are built around Canon’s new RF mount, which features a large 54mm diameter and shorter back focus distance than on current EOS DSLR cameras. The RF mount enhances communication and power transmission between the lens and camera body, which Canon claims has enabled it to achieve the world’s fastest autofocus speed for a full-frame mirrorless camera system.
Canon told me that the new RF lenses are very much now the companies priority when it comes to lens development, so I think it would be safe to assume that we will be seeing a lot more RF mount lenses appearing over the next few years.
RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is tiny in comparison to the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM. 70-200mm is a popular focal length for both video and still photography shooters.
RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM
The RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM gains 1mm on the wide end over the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM. The news lens also gets IS, something previous 16-35mm f2.8 EF lenses didn’t have. Only the EF 16-35mm F4 lenses had IS. If you are planning on shooting video the addition of IS on the new RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM is a welcome addition.
RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM
The RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is a popular focal length when used on full frame sensors. The lens is nice and compact and similar in size to the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, and just like that lens, it also features IS.
RF 85mm f/1.2L USM & RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS
The RF 85mm f/1.2L USM is fast aperture mid-telephoto prime lens. Canon says it will offer excellent performance. The EF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens is popular with still photographers as well as videographers who want to use it as an interview lens. The RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS uses Defocus Smoothing lens technology. canon says it is a uniquely designed lens that offers beautifully smooth defocused bokeh.
RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM
The RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is a versatile, all-purpose lens that offers a range of focal lengths. It is aimed at amateur photographers and users looking for a good all-in-one travel lens. With a good focal range and IS it could be an interesting lens for video shooters.
