Wooden Camera has released a PL Mount modification kit for the C200/C200B that allows users to convert their camera to PL Mount. Previously, owners would have to choose to buy the C200 in either EF or PL mount and could send in their camera to Canon for a mount swap at the cost of $1,500 USD. Wooden Camera’s costs $499 USD.
Wooden camera also makes a PL modification kit for the Panasonic EVA-1, and it’s good to see a version now for the C200. Adding a PL mount certainly increases the cameras appeal to a wider audience and allows it to take a much wider selection of cinema lenses.
The PL Mount is made of aircraft grade aluminium and includes the PL port cap. Shims are provided with the kit for adjusting back focus and the appropriate shims are installed prior to shipping. Further adjustment should not be needed but can be checked using a wide angle lens and a focus chart.
While the modification process looks easy enough, Wooden Camera does offer an installation service for an extra $150.
What you do need to remember is that if you swap the EF mount over to PL you will lose all the touch screen auto focus and auto focus capabilities that make the C200 such an appealing camera. It’s unclear whether this modification will void your factory Canon warranty.
Important Note: While the vast majority of lenses are compatible, due to the ND filter turret on the Canon C200, lenses with a rear protrusion longer than 33.5mm, measured from the PL flange, are not compatible.
