Wooden camera have announced Zip Focus, a single sided follow focus that attaches directly to a 15mm lightweight rod and has a gear ratio of 1:1. The Zip Focus retails for $499 USD and looks to be a good entry level follow focus for smaller, compact cameras.
The Zip Focus securely locks into position on 15mm lightweight rod and will not slip. Wooden Camera say that the Zip Focus is the perfect companion for compact and handheld camera setups. The Zip Focus has a unibody design, and a lot of thought has gone into making sure that it occupies minimal space and can be easily and quickly adjusted to accommodate any lens and camera configuration. The follow focus features a unique pivoting bracket that ensures the hand wheel is always in the upright position. The Zip Focus is interchangeable between a 15mm lightweight and 15mm Studio/ 19mm rod clamp.
The included .8 mod cine lens gear and friction gear can be flipped to the front or back position which is helpful for compact lens configurations. If you are using a small lens there isn’t a lot of space to position a follow focus, so being able to flip the lens gear is very important. The Zip Focus features a hard stop disc that can be used with DSLR lenses with infinite focus rotation and two standard marking discs are included for cine lenses.
The new Wooden Camera follow focus is compatible with UFF-1 UNIVERSAL FOLLOW FOCUS (WHIP ONLY), ZIP FOCUS (19MM/15MM STUDIO ROD CLAMP ONLY), and UFF-1 UNIVERSAL FOLLOW FOCUS (CRANK ONLY) accessories which can all be purchased separately.
One of the nice features about the Zip Focus is that it doesn’t need to attach to two 15mm rods, it attaches to just one. This is handy in compact set ups as it allows you to get your right hand closer to the lens and camera body.
The Zip Focus weighs in at 352 g (0.78 lbs) and looks like a nice compact solution if you are in the market for a follow focus and don’t want to break the bank. The Zip Focus is now available to pre-order and it is estimated to start shipping at the start of April for $499 USD.
