Freefly Systems has released a new Velocity Kit for the MōVI Pro. The kit is designed to improve the aerodynamic balance in high-speed applications whether it’s on a drone or mounted to a vehicle. Mounting a gimbal on a vehicle is becoming more accessible thanks to more companies entering the space providing complimentary products like the Flowcine Black Arm.
In high-speed applications, the limiting factor in how fast you can go is an aerodynamic imbalance where the pan motor experiences excessive resistance and loses hold.
The velocity kit consists of a 3-fin adjustable carbon fan, 25mm clamp and a “T” adapter plate. The fin can be positioned anywhere on the 25mm landing gear or pan tubes or onto theMōVI Pro frame. You could say that it works similarly to how a spoiler works on a car.
When shooting perpendicular to the direction of travel, there is an imbalance of resistance due to the camera package. In this case, the fin is added to the other side to aerodynamically balance the rig.
Using the Freefly app, you can monitor the current draw of each motor. The blue chart represents the pan motor and in this example you can see that the pan motor has to work harder to maintain its position compared to the second frame where the fin has been installed.
Real World Testing
Ascending Works has been testing the Velocity Kit for the last month and has posted a teaser going 50mph and shooting 5K at 105mm. As with all gimbal setups, they do require a lot of prep work & testing. According to Freefly, not all camera & lens packages will benefit from the Velocity Kit.
Pricing & Availability
The Velocity Kit is available to order now for USD$79 at the Freefly online store.
