The Arri Master Grip Basic is a simpler version of the company’s control system without the electronics, designed to balance rigs for single operators.
Less is more
The full-fat Master Grips offer full FIZ control of lens motors and have previously been available as a dual handle kit. However after listening to user feedback Arri have decided to produce a kit featuring one electronic handle and one cast magnesium handle with no controls.
This is aimed at single operators who want to be able to control lenses while using them on a shoulder-mounted camera.
Hands-on control of Canon EF lenses
When paired with an Alexa Mini and Canon EF-mount lenses as in the picture above the user can control focus, iris and record start/stop from one handle. The other handle features the same grip style but is there to balance the rig rather than offer more adjustment options.
The basic handles are, like the Master Grips, based on the ergonomics of the Arriflex but are constructed from magnesium to make them strong but light.
You can also attach the grips to tripod pan arms via an adapter, making them suitable for use in a manner similar to a more traditional LANC controller from a static position.
Master Grip Basic pricing and availability
A single non-electronic Master Grip Basic will retail for €590 and a kit for the Alexa Mini comprising one Basic grip, a Master Grip, cabling, support arms and case will cost €3,900. Which I suspect will either strike you as being incredibly expensive or offering reasonable value for money!
