Sigma have announced a price and shipping date for their full frame 24-35mm T2.2 Zoom Cine lens. The lens will begin shipping in June 2017 for a retail price of $4999US. This is Sigma’s only full frame cine zoom lens, both the 18-35mm T2 and 50-100mm T2 only cover Super 35mm sensors.
The Sigma 24-35mm T2.2 FF Zoom is only available in Sony E-mount and Canon EF mount options. Unfortunately the lens will not be available in PL mount which is a real shame.
Despite the 100% new mechanical lens body design, the 24-35mm features identical optics to those found in the stills version of the lens. I tested the 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art back in July last year and found its performance to be as good or very close to comparable prime lenses. It is very sharp, has nice contrast, and almost no focus breathing.
$4999US may seem like a lot of money to pay for a zoom lens with such a limited focal range, but I would consider the 24-35mm to be more of a variable prime than a zoom. For me personally this lens makes a lot of sense as you don’t have to buy a couple of prime lenses such as a 25 and 35mm. You can get the performance of two prime lenses with the convenience of only having to carry around one lens.
