Izotope RX6 has two new functions, both of which the company say have been informed by machine learning to help clean up dialogue. Izotope gave their algorithms examples of both clean audio and unwanted noise in order to help the system better determine which is which.
Clean perfect audio capture doesn’t always happen. Sure we try our best but sometimes we have to “fix it in post.”
De-rustle and Dialogue Isolate
The first new filter is called De-rustle and is intended to help minimise unwanted noise from lavalier mics. Think facial hair or clothing bumping the mic. Dialogue Isolate is more ambitious still and works to remove or minimise unwanted background noise while your subjects are speaking.

Mark Edward Lewis from the Cinemasound blog and our Chuck Fadely got a demo at NAB this year and you can see (and hear) the results in the video above. If you listen via headphones it’s possible to tell that the audio has been processed – but as a tool to clean up sound that might otherwise be unusable it looks like something useful to keep in your electronic back pocket, so to speak.
Issues like lav mics rustling, background noise and intermittent low-end wind rumble removal are very common and sometimes they just can’t be avoided, especially if you don’t have the right type of microphone for certain situations.

RX 6 is available in four different packages depending on your needs. The newest features are found in the Advanced version.

Izotope’s RX series is a popular tool, and one that many people swear by. The two new filters are only available in the premium version of the Rx6 suite of tools – Advanced Rx. It’s currently on special for $799 US (saving $400 US) until May 31.
