Dutch company Vocas have become one of the first rig makers to release accessories aimed specifically at the Sony FS7 II – although many of the parts are also compatible with the original FS7. There are two new baseplate options for FS7 and FS7 II, that bring the total number of custom Vocas FS7 baseplate options to three.
The Base plate MKII (part 0350-1700) is form fitted to the base of the camera and requires the camera’s own shoulder pad to be removed. In its place you get adjustable rubber shoulder pad, fixed rosette attachment, VCT-14 adjustment and 15 mm rails in the front and back. The advantage of this design is that it is very low profile, but on the downside is that the shoulder pad has virtually no adjustment for balance point. If you want perfect shoulder balance you’ll need to add batteries or counterweights to tune it.
The second baseplate option, the USBP-15 MKII, solves this with a two part solution. There is an adapter that replaces the stock Sony shoulder pad (part 0350-2255), which in turn fits the camera to Vocas’ sliding baseplate system (part 0350-2207). This gives the camera forward and back adjustment for better balance, but does bring the camera a little higher up on the shoulder. In my case this is a sacrifice I would be prepared to make for the balancing capability.
For the top of the camera there is a H shaped plate (part 0350-1367) that now has 15mm rod support added for both the front and rear of the camera. It also has multiple 1/4 screw threads for mounting of accessories. This is handy if you want to add focus motors and monitors to your rig.
Another new part is a PL lens support that mounts H plates and supports the Vocas E-mount to PL adapter (part 0900-0016).
