Chinese lens rehousing specialists G.L. Optics have just unveiled their latest project – a 500mm T4.5 cinema converted super telephoto lens. This is based on the venerable Canon FD 500mm f4.5 which was a popular stills telephoto back in the days before autofocus became popular (I used to have one back in the day).
The G.L. Optics 500mm T4.5 is available in PL and Canon EF mount (mechanical only) and can be changed between the two. After the rehousing is complete the lens weights in at 4.25Kg/9.37 lbs and measures 410mm in length (in PL mount). The front diameter is 114mm making it suitable for use with a mattebox. The lens has the cine standard 0.8 mod pitch gears on focus and iris rings.
Unlike other conversions of this lens done in the past, where the FD mount was simply replaced with a PL or Universal one, the G.L. Optics is a complete rehouse offering a newly designed focus and iris system for cine use. The original white lens barrel is replaced with a matte black one and there is a new lens support to allowing easier mounting to rigs. It will also come with a flight case.
The price for the PL version of the lens is $5500 US plus shipping and taxes. The interchangeable EF mount is an extra $350 US. For more details visit the G.L. Optics website. To purchase in the US you can visit Cinemaglass.com.
