SLR Magic have gained a reputation for creating affordable cine style lenses with fast apertures and anamorphic adapters. At Cinegear Expo this month they announced their latest duo – a 35mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.4. These join the previously launched 50mm f1.1 to make a trio of fast, yet compact lenses.
They are native E-mount and both the 35mm and 75mm cover full-frame, making them an interesting proposition for a7S and a7S II owners. They have smooth focus and iris controls with built-in gear rings.
Despite their fast apertures both lenses have a 52mm front filter thread making them easier to filter. They are also designed to mate easily with SLR Magic’s newer front mounted anamorphic adapters. These work with the lenses in Super35 mode.
Clinton Harn and Laszlo Kun recently took the lenses out for a test drive to get an idea of what you can expect from them. As you can see from the results in the video at the start of this article, bokeh and sharpness both seem to be quite pleasing considering the price of the lenses. There is some chromatic aberration and flare, but nothing that I find too disturbing. The test was done on an a7R II using Cine gamma – you can expect to see a slightly better image with less moire if you were to use an a7S II in full-frame mode.
Both lenses have a MSRP of just $499 each and are due to be available in August 2016. For more information you can check out the SLR Magic website or follow them on Twitter @slrmagic.
