Sony’s Peter Crithary has taken to Twitter today to announce that 120 frames per second 4K RAW shooting will come to the F55 cinema camera at some unspecified point in the future. The tweet consists of no more than this simple message and the caveat is that it require need an optional future accessory.
There is no more information at present and no indication if the sister F5 model will also be capable of this. What the future accessory might be is also likely to be a source of much speculation until Sony give us official word. Perhaps it is some kind of additional board in the camera, or a modified version of the current AXS-R5 RAW recorder. It would be great if the 4K 120fps option could also work with external recorders like the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+.
Of course Sony aren’t the first maker to announce 4K 120fps RAW in their cinema cameras. RED have 4K 120fps on the Weapon using REDCODE compression. Canon have a 120 fps 4K uncompressed RAW option on the C500, but with only half the vertical resolution.
