What’s in the bag? Video journalist Christian Parkinson shows us his Sony a7S travel kit

Like many camera operators, I’m almost as obsessed with luggage and packing as I am with camera gear – finding the most efficient ways to cart all that equipment around is crucial for anyone travelling frequently for work. Africa-based video journalist Christian Parkinson of Imagejunkies shoots amazing features and news stories for the BBC with a surprisingly modest kit.

Here’s how he does it: he’s produced a nice video showing how he packs his Sony a7S, a5100 and everything else he needs – from a lumbar roll to support his lower back on planes to a variable ND filter – into a very small space. There are plenty of handy tips and helpful explanation of how he’s selected his essentials: “I travel light, I like to keep things quick, and I like to have as much with me [as] hand luggage as possible,” he said.

Watch it and you might not need to lug everything bar the kitchen sink next time you travel.

What’s also really interesting to me is to see how his kit has transformed from just a few years ago when he was working with more traditional cameras to shoot broadcast news. Have a look at the video below from 2013:
