Sony released their latest firmware for the a7S, just days after the big announcements of the a7R II, RX10 II and RX100 IV. While these cameras received a lot of new bells and whistles it seems this latest firmware update for the a7S is hardly worth mentioning. Version 2.0 firmware for the camera ads…..drumroll….a faster camera boot up time. This is the only new thing that the firmware does.
I am very worried that Sony seem to be developing a pattern of releasing cameras and then not supporting them (the exception would be the F5/55). Some of Sony’s cameras have received the XAVC-S codec in the past, but the level of firmware and feature updates pales in comparison to cameras such as the Panasonic GH4. With the rate at which they push out new models, both the cameras resale value and relevance will both suffer. I very much expect a replacement for the a7S sometime this year and very much doubt we will see any more improvements or further updates to the camera.
The firmware can be downloaded here from the Sony website.
