On the Teradek live show at NAB I caught up with Brian Valente from Redrockmicro. Brian discussed how the company’s Halo system works to Rodney Charters ASC and DP and camera operator Brown Cooper, who worked with Rodney on Dallas.
The Halo scans a scene and determines where the people and other objects are; it can then perform a variety of functions like holding focus in a given area, or pulling focus smoothly between objects.
The system consists of a scanner, displays to show scene and focus distance, and a follow focus unit that can be controlled by data received by the system as well as a manual override.
The system looks well suited to drama work, but I can also see it being deployed in a studio environment too.
