Legendary Steadicam operator Larry McConkey impressed by MoVI MIMIC system

By site editor Dan Chung:

When I was learning Steadicam, one operator’s name kept coming up: Larry McConkey. And even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, you will know his work. He has operated Steadicam on some of the biggest movies such as Goodfellas, The Silence of the Lambs, Basic Instinct, Carlito’s Way, Mission Impossible, Kill Bill, The Bourne Ultimatum, Lucy, 12 Years a Slave and Hugo.

So when McConkey gets excited about a piece of motion control equipment, you had better take note. This week Freefly posted a video of Larry testing out the new MIMIC mode on the MoVI, with a MoVI controller. MIMIC copies the user’s movements and translates them into camera motion. The responsiveness of the system is very impressive and it looks like McConkey is enamoured of the setup.

If you didn’t catch it last week you can see our own Newsshooter report from NAB on MIMIC below:

At NAB Freefly were quoting the price of MIMIC at $495 on top of your existing MoVI system. It seems however that existing MoVI controller owners will be able to gain the functionality with firmware update. The notes on the video say: “Freefly MIMIC functionality will just require a firmware update for those of you who already have a MōVI Controller. We will be pushing out that beta FW in the next few weeks”.

You can find out more about MIMIC and the cost of the system on the Freefly website.
