Litepanels Caliber 3 Light Kit – A portable solution for shooters that runs on AA batteries

By technical editor Matt Allard:

Litepanels have announced an interesting looking three light kit called the Caliber. The lights feature a fresnel design and from the above video they look similar in size and design to the popular Dedolight DLH-4 – except that the Caliber uses LED technology. The Caliber lights dim from 0-100%, feature spot and flood focus functionality and an output equivalent of around 150W and only require only 17W to power. The lights will run off A/C or 4xAA batteries (although the fixture is 2x brighter when run on AC) and according to Litepanels they offer flicker free shooting at any frame rate. The whole kit weighs in at less than 13 pounds (5.9kg).

The kit looks well suited to shooters on the go but my only concern is most lights of this size tend not to flood wide enough to be used as a key light for a mid shot interview. I own a Litepanels Sola ENG kit which I travel with everywhere. Even though I love them I would hesitate to use them as a key light for my interviews. It will be interesting to actually check them out at NAB and see how they perform.

The kit features 3 lights, multi-jointed flexible tripods, Gel Sets, Color Frames, 4-way barndoors, international power supplies, compact light stand, stand adapter, and softcase bag.
