By technical editor Matt Allard:
Bright Tangerine have announced the Misfit ATOM matte box, specifically designed for use with gimbals and Steadicams. Featuring a tray-less filter holder, the ATOM allows you to load filters directly into the core. This clever design also allows you to tilt filters slightly to prevent flare or unwanted reflections. You can use one or two filters – either 4×4 or 4×4.65, or even a combination of both for added flexibility.
Using matte boxes on wide angle lenses for gimbal and Steadicam work is very problematic as you often end up with a vignette effect due to the edges of the matte box creeping into shot. The wide shade of the ATOM means it will cover lenses as wide as a 14mm Cooke S4. You can also Use RED Pro Zooms at 5K.
Weighing in at just 98g without the shade, and 195g with the shade the ATOM is made out of a single block of billet aluminium. The Atom is less than a quarter of the weight of a standard Misfit or Arri LMB25.
Another unique feature of the ATOM is the ability to detach the shade hood very quickly and just use the filters. The mattebox attaches to the lens via a clamp on ring. This is 114mm in diameter and you can connect to virtually any lens with the range of Misfit donut ring adaptors. You can rod-mount the ATOM to 15mm LWS, 15mm and 19mm studio rods, and it’s compatible with many Misfit accessories.
The Misfit ATOM looks to be a very clever design that not only keeps weight down but incorporates key features that many users look for.
